FIFA U-17 World Cup: Colombia first team to arrive in India

With the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup set to begin in next two weeks, Colombia became the first team to arrive in India for the tournament. The South American nation is placed in Group A and will play two of their group matches in New Delhi and one match in Navi Mumbai. Upon landing in New Delhi late last night, Colombia coach Orlando Restrepo said, "We're delighted to be here. The boys and the staff are all looking forward to a competitive tournament where we will put our best foot forward".

India gear up for Nepal test

Following an impressive three-nil victory against a strong Palestine in the first match of AFC U-16 Qualifiers, India will aim to stay cautious in their approach when they take on hosts Nepal at the Halchowk Stadium on Friday. "There's no room for complacency. Nepal are a strong side and we know each other with both teams having played in the recently concluded U-15 SAFF Championship final.They will be backed by a partisan crowd and it will be a challenge for us," coach Bibiano Fernandes said.

Asian Indoor Games: India win one gold, two bronze on Day 5

The Indian contingent added one more gold and two bronze medals to their tally on the fifth day of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games here at Ashgabat in Turkmenistan last evening. Ajay Kumar Saroj clinched the gold in men's 1500m race after clocking in at three minute and 48.67 seconds. Meanwhile, Neha Solanki and Jyoti picked a bronze in +87kg category and -87kg category respectively of the women's kurash event.

Chelsea striker Costa to return to Atletico 

Chelsea's Spanish striker Diego Costa will return to Atletico Madrid in January for a fixed transfer agreement worth 62 million euros ($74 million) plus eight million euros ($9.54 million) in variables, both clubs announced on Thursday. Brazilian-born Costa, 28, has not played for the past 98 days, since a 2018 Russian World Cup qualifying stage match versus Macedonia in June.

Jake LaMotta, legendary boxer, dies at 95

Jake LaMotta, the middle-weight champion who was immortalized on screen by Robert De Niro in 'Raging Bull,' has died at the age of 95. According to TMZ, LaMotta died on Tuesday in a nursing home due to Pneumonia. LaMotta's death was announced by his kin on social media, with his eldest daughter Christi LaMotta paying tribute on Facebook.

Pakistan paceman Irfan raring to return after ban

Mohammad Irfan expects to avoid a backlash from Pakistan fans after the paceman served a six-month ban for failing to disclose approaches made by bookmakers during a domestic Twenty20 tournament and is happy for the chance to resume his career. The 35-year-old, who played for Islamabad United in the UAE-based 2017 Pakistan Super League (PSL), was fined and banned for a year -- six months of which were suspended -- as part of a probe by the country’s cricket board (PCB). 

Mexican F1 track undamaged by quake, race to go ahead

Mexican Grand Prix organisers say next month’s Formula One race in Mexico City will go ahead as planned despite the capital being hit by its deadliest earthquake in three decades. Marketing head Rodrigo Sanchez told reporters that the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in the southeast of the city was not damaged. The grand prix, the 18th round of the 20 race season, is scheduled for October 29 on the weekend before Mexico’s annual ‘Dia de Muertos’ (Day of the dead) holidays. 

Wozniacki bounces back, Konta stunned at Tokyo Open

Danish woman tennis star Caroline Wozniacki had to dig deep on Thursday to prevail 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 over United States' Shelby Rogers in the Tokyo Open pre-quarterfinals. Defending champion Wozniacki, seeded no 3, bounced back when she was 0-3 down in the third set, to seal her 50th victory this season, advancing to the last 8 in Tokyo for the sixth time in a row. Two breaks were all Rogers, world No.59, needed to clinch the first set, before Wozniacki hit back in the second set, when she lost just five points on serve.

England-West Indies second ODI abandoned

Play in the second one-day international between England and West Indies at Trent Bridge today was abandoned as a no-result washout. Only 11 minutes play was possible at the Nottingham ground before rain saw the umpires take the players off the field with England 21 without loss after 2.2 overs, having been sent into bat. Jonny Bairstow was nine not out and Alex Hales 10 not out. England remain 1-0 up in a five-match series that continues in Bristol on Sunday.
