Elano was arrested under IPC Sections 323, 341 and 504 that deal with voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.
Chennaiyin FC captain Elano Blumer was arrested for allegedly assaulting FC Goa co-owner Dattaraj Salgaonkar in Goa on Sunday, a little after Chennai beat Pune 3-2 and won the second edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) title, reports said.
The arrest happened after Salgaonkar filed a formal complaint with the police against the former Brazil striker, accusing him of insulting, abusing and assaulting Salgaonkar at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium during the post-match celebration.
Reports said Elano was arrested under IPC Sections 323, 341 and 504 that deal with voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace. He was reportedly under police custody till 1 am on Monday. Whether he has been released later is not known.
Srinivas Dempo, the second co-owner of Goa, who was present during the incident, was quoted as saying that Elano came out of the dugout and started making fun of FC Goa players, soon after beating them 3-2. When Salgaocar questioned him about this, Elano assaulted him, according to Dempo.
“We are inquiring into the incident. A formal complaint has been lodged and based on that an FIR has been filed,” a report had Margao police inspector C.L. Patil saying.
The FC Goa team had boycotted the presentation ceremony and the post-match media conference. No representative from the team was available for comment. Even the Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar boycotted the presentation.
“I left the stadium when, apart from poor refereeing, I noticed the Chennaiyin FC captain insulting, abusing and assaulting Mr Salgaonkar. I did not find it worthwhile to even wait for the prize distribution function. I was invited for the match by Mr Salgaonkar,” Parsekar was quoted saying.
