A Gurgaon based company, Balance Hero, found that prepaid users, who form a large segment of mobile phone users in the country, often face the risk of running out of balance—voice or data—especially when they are in an urgent need to make a call or look something up on the web. 'True Balance', an app launched by the company, is designed specifically to suit the needs of this section of users.

In a survey conducted, the company had also found that around 200 million smartphone users use prepaid services.

According to the company, although balance checking facility is available on mobile phones—users are typically asked to use a USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data), a GSM communication technology that is used to send text between a mobile phone and an application programme in the network—many people find this cumbersome as it is difficult for people to remember the USSD codes of every operator. 'True Balance' app resolves this problem by helping users better manage their prepaid balance by providing accurate information about voice and data usage.

“India is already the fourth largest mobile app economy in the world and the amount of time Indians spend on apps has also increased dramatically. The importance of mobile apps cannot be underscored now as the annual figure for India is projected to reach 7.7 billion downloads this year, and by 2020 it is projected to grow to 20.1 billion. We have received close to 10 million downloads in India and we are successful in helping users manage their prepaid mobile balances and data usage with a single touch,” said Cheolwon (Charlie) Lee, founder and CEO of True Balance, which has been funded by Soft Bank.

The company claims that 'True Balance' provides 10 times quicker and more intuitive balance check and recharge services. The app, which is free of charge, supports all telecom operators and circles. “We have found that a user might not remember data expiration and as a result might end up using their voice balance. Our app reminds the user about the data pack and rate cutter expiration date by beaming a notification,” remarked Lee.

The app, which also works offline and uses big data analytics insights to give users real-time information about the best plans and offers to suit their requirements, is available on Google Play for free download.

The company's 10 million downloads are mainly from Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Chandigarh.
