Former UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani strongly believes in digital signatures. During the launch of e-SignDesk—an innovative electronic signing feature from Bengaluru-based startup LegalDesk.com—he said it was great to see startups like LegalDesk using Aadhar for eSigning. He noted that digital signatures will make way to paperless processes.

Nilekani pointed out that there was a phenomenal increase in Aadhar enrollments in the country, crossing the one billion mark.

Interestingly, eSignDesk makes of signing documents possible even if the parties concerned are not physically present. It is built on the Aadhar platform to allow citizens to remotely sign any document. Any Indian citizen who possesses a registered mobile number linked with the Aadhar card can use this facility.

“There are around 70 billion wet signatures happening in the country annually and digital signatures is an excellent method to replace wet signatures. Since it is an instant signing feature, the need for physical presence of parties involved is removed. eSign cannot be replicated or forged and since the content on the document cannot be tampered with, it deters fraud to a large extent while making it useful for self attestation purposes. The eSignDesk service confirms to the Information Technology Act, 2000, and such electronically signed documents shall be considered legally valid throughout the country,” explained Krupesh Bhat, founder of LegalDesk.com, which has around 150 legal consultants in the team.

In order to use the eSignDesk service, the document to be digitally singed must first be uploaded to the website. The next step will involve entering the Aadhar number of the parties. A one time password (OTP) will then be sent to the mobile number registered with the Aadhar card. On submission of the correct OTP, a digital signature will be generated and placed on the document. Once everyone has placed their digital signatures using the same process, the document can then be downloaded for safekeeping.

The service will be available through the website www.eSignDesk.com. The company also launched an Android mobile application ‘Rental Agreement’ which will allow users to create rental agreements or leases digitally.
