Move to facilitate more working days in schools and government departments

In a cabinet decision on Tuesday, the newly elected Yogi Adityanath-government has scrapped 15 public holidays in Uttar Pradesh, with immediate effect.

Most of these holidays were imposed by the previous governments in honour of prominent political and spiritual personalities, often marking their birth or death anniversaries.

The cabinet approval for the decision, which came yesterday, comes close on heels with the chief minister's recent statement on public holidays. On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, Yogi had declared that some of the public holidays would be cancelled to facilitate more working days in schools and government departments.

The government was forced to take the decision because of an abundance in the number of holidays, said cabinet minister Srikant Sharma, who is also the government spokesperson.
