Woman ends life as husband fails to keep promise

A young woman at Howrah near Kolkata committed suicide by hanging herself last night allegedly because her husband did not come from work to take her to pandal hopping during Durga puja.

Police said Mita Das had been married to Rana Mondal of Uluberia just six months back. Rana had promised Mita that he would take her out during all four days of Durga puja as they had not gone to honeymoon so far. However, Rana couldn't keep his promise as the local private hospital, where he works at, allegedly did not give him break.

A disillusioned Mita had to remain in her house throughout the festival as her husband was not around. On Monday, she repeatedly rang her husband to ask him to come home, but Rana even refused to attend her call, apparently being under tremendous work pressure.

Rana came back home at around 1.30 in the midnight and an altercation broke out between the couple. Rana allegedly thrashed Mita during the spat.

“She was found hanging in her room early morning today,” said an officer of Uluberia police station in Howrah.

Mita was taken to the same hospital where Rana works at, but she was declared brought dead and her body was sent for post-mortem.

Police have arrested Rana acting on the complaint of Mita’s father.
