West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered job appointment letter to the widow of a young man who had died due to alleged medical negligence at a private hospital in Kolkata.

Ruby Roy, wife of late Sanjoy Roy, walked into the office of the CM where she was handed over the appointment letter by Mamata as a clerk in state tourism department.

Ruby thanked Mamata and said, “I am happy that didi listened to me,” and added that she is waiting to ensure that those responsible for the death of her husband be brought to book.

Sanjoy was admitted to Kolkata’s Apollo Hospital last month and they had to pay Rs. 7 lakh for his week-long stay in the private hospital. When Ruby wanted to get Sanjoy discharged to take him to the state run SSKM hospital, she was asked to pay all dues before he was discharged. Sanjoy was held back and Ruby had to beg to a neighbour for money and had to offer their fixed deposit amount as bond to discharge him.

At last, Sanjoy was discharged but when he reached SSKM hospital, he was declared brought dead.

The protest of Ruby thereafter made the government sit up. An inquiry commission was formed both by Apollo and the state government. The hospital removed its eastern region president Rupali Basu.

In the past three days, Basu was called by the police two times and questioned.

The West Bengal government set up a regulatory commission and assembly passed a bill which armed the commission of slapping fine to hospitals and doctors for any kind of negligence.

Nadimul Huq, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP, on Thursday addressed the House and asked the Centre to bring similar legislation against private hospitals in the country.

“We must bring such legislation and set up a regulatory commission to protect the interests of the citizens of the country,” Huq said.
