Inspector Sidhartha Ghosal, the officer in charge of Salanpur police station in Burdwan district, allegedly fired himself at his chest.

According to other policemen, Ghosal was seen collecting several files from his junior officers in the morning. Around 12 at noon, they heard gunshots from his chamber. They rushed to his room and found him sitting unconscious in his chair, with his service revolver lying close to him on the floor.

He was first rushed to the Burdwan medical college hospital where doctors found that the bullet had pierced his chest and went out.

He was being shifted to another private hospital for better treatment but was brought back to the same hospital as his condition worsened. However, he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.

Superintendent of Burdwan police L.M. Meena said he was totally in the dark about why the officer killed himself.

Though the motive is yet to be ascertained, Ghosal is said to have been in a depressed state for the last few days. He was also allegedly worried about his proposed transfer.
