JAMMU AND KASHMIR

Video of Kashmir youth tied to Army jeep goes viral

kashmir-army-jeep (File) Video of Kashmir youth tied to Army jeep | Omar Abdullah Twitter

"This young man was TIED to the front of an army jeep to make sure no stones were thrown at the jeep? This is just so shocking!"

The Army is verifying the authenticity of a video portraying a Kashmir youth tied to a jeep and used as human shield against stone pelters in central Kashmir district of Budgam. The district recorded a mere 2 per cent turnout during the repoll for Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.

In the video, a young man is seen tied to the bumper of an Army jeep.

Army spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said they were verifying the credentials of the video.

In the video, a soldier could be heard saying, “Those who throw stones will meet the same fate.”

Reacting to video, Omar Abdullah tweeted, “I understand the outrage the CRPF video generated. I’m also outraged that the video of the youth on the jeep won’t generate the same anger.”

He tweeted, ''This young man was TIED to the front of an army jeep to make sure no stones were thrown at the jeep? This is just so shocking!!!

''Let’s see channels going ballistic &having discussions with outraged panelists now. Probably not since “Kashmir is ours” hell with Kashmiris,'' Omar tweeted.

The video surfaced right after a clip showed youths assaulting CRPF jawans during bypolls to the Srinagar parliamentary constituency on April 9 in Budgam.

In another video, the CRPF troopers could be seen firing directly at a stone-pelting mob at Budgam on April 9. One of the boys falls down after a CRPF trooper fires at him from close range. The rest of the boys flee soon after.

Some neighbors who, perhaps, shot the video from inside their houses could be heard as saying, "He (boy) has been hit in the head and he is dead".

The video has raised questions about how the CRPF has been flouting the standard operating procedure (SOP) by shooting at the mob and not exercising restraint.
