A local BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh asked Muslims to vote for his wife in the civic elections being held in Barabanki district of the state or be ready to face consequences.

According to media reports, Ranjeet Kumar Srivastava, who was campaigning for his wife Shashi Srivastava, in his speech, claimed that Muslims can no longer go to the superintendent of police or district magistrate to get any work done as the state is no longer ruled by the Samajwadi Party. Dara Singh Chauhan and Ramapati Shastri, who are ministers in the state cabinet, were present on stage when Srivastava was making these statements on November 13.

This is the BJP’s reign, he said, adding that Muslims may have to face difficulties which they may never have faced earlier.

Srivastava, who is the outgoing chairperson of the Nawabganj Nagar Palika, warned that if Muslims do not help get his wife elected in the civic polls, they will be distancing themselves from the saffron party and the Samajwadi Party will not be able to come to their rescue.

He said Muslims in the area will be better off if they get his wife elected, and added that he is not begging for votes.

Minister Dara Singh Chauhan was, however, of a different opinion as he said nobody should make such remarks as the party believes in ‘sabka saath-sabka vikas’.

Srivastava later attempted at a feeble clarification when he said he wasn't threatening Muslims, but merely trying to persuade them to vote for the BJP.
