Uproarious scenes marked the first appearance of Yogi Adityanath in the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly as chief minister. Amidst noisy protests from the opposition over the poor law and order situation in the state, the session was suspended for the rest of the day.

As soon as session began, the opposition members, including the SP, BSP and the Congress, began shouting. They hurled paper balls at Governor Ram Naik who was addressing the joint session of the assembly. Marshalls had a tough time covering the governor from paper balls. His speech was frequently disrupted by continuous hooting. Even as the sloganeering and shouting continued, the governor read out his address.

Minister Siddharth Nath Singh slammed SP chief Akhilesh Yadav for keeping quiet when his party members were creating a ruckus in the house.

Meanwhile, the house, with the consent of the chief minister, decided to telecast the proceedings of the house through Doordarshan.

The session will continue till May 22 with six sittings. In the 403-member house, the ruling BJP has 312 members, followed by SP (47), BSP (19) and Congress (7).
