Before the crucial polls into Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the Samajwadi Party-led government has decided to give an attractive gift to the legislators of the state. After hiking salaries of chief minister and its ministers, the Akhilesh Yadav government is all set to increase salaries of MLAs too.

The government has decided to hike pension of ex-legislators too. The decision, seen as a step to keep them in good humour, would put Rs 128.89 crore additional burden on state exchequer per annum. All the legislators unanimously hailed the government decision.

Once this hike comes into force, legislators will get Rs 1.25 lakh per month which was earlier Rs 75,000. It includes their salary and other allowances. Besides this, they will get a hike of worth Rs 1 lakh in railway coupons.

Parliamentary affairs minister Azam Khan tabled a bill in this regard in the Assembly, which will be passed soon.

The bill proposes to increase the basic salary of legislators of both the houses from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 and hike the constituency allowance from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000. Medical allowance will be increased from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. The bill will hike their secretary-allowance from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. Their allowance for taking part in the proceedings of Assembly has been doubled from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000.

The bill will benefit ex-legislators too whose pension will be hiked from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. This is for the second time in the regime of Akhilesh Yadav that salaries and allowances of MLAs have been hiked. Last year also the government had revised their salaries.
