Yogi government to gift condoms and pills for newly weds

To control the mushrooming population in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government has come out with a novel method. It will gift condoms and birth control pills to newly weds. Minister Siddarth Nath Singh said that the chief minister will initiate the scheme on July 11—on occasion of World Population Day.

In this scheme asha bahus (female health workers in rural areas of the state) will gift a health kit, replete with condoms and pills, to the newly married couples. The kit will include a letter from the state health department, enumerating benefits of family planning. The health workers will also brief the couples about spacing between children and various other methods of birth control. Initially, this campaign will commence in 30 districts of the state.

Now, a 'Krishna Land' in the state

The UP government is serious about promoting religious tourism in the state. It is now planning to develop a ‘Krishna Land’, along the lines of Disney Land, in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar has directed UP tourism department to prepare a proposal in this regard. In this scheme, major emphasis will be on development of sacred cities—Mathura and Vrindavan. The development work will be undertaken through various schemes of the World Bank. While developing Krishna Land, river Yamuna will be channelized and brought to various ghats of Mathura. Not only this, the government has introduced a helicopter service for 'parikrama' (aerial tour) of ‘Govardhan’ in Mathura. This move will be useful for aged pilgrims, who are unable to walk on foot. The fair for this aerial tour will be Rs 2499 per person and the chopper will take off from DAV college helipad. Tickets for this can be booked online too.

Clean chit to Yogi

The state government has given a clean chit to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The government has decided not pursue the case pertaining to riots that took place in 2007 in Gorakhpur. In this regard, the government had filed an affidavit in the court and decided not go for the prosecution of Yogi. It may be recalled that Pervez, a resident of Gorakhpur, along with others, had filed a petition in court demanding a CBI probe into 2007 riots. The case is being heard by the bench of Justice Krishna Murari and Justice K.P. Singh. The lawyer of petitioner has sought three weeks time to reply to the affidavit filed by the state government and the court has fixed July 27 for the next date of hearing. Since the state government has denied its permission to take the case further, legal experts say it would mean a clean chit to Yogi.
