CLEAN GANGA

Uma Bharti plans padyatra over Namami Gange mission

44Uma Uma Bharti

Uma Bharti, Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation wants to go on a padyatra from Gangotri to Ganga Sagar to check the implementation of the Namami Gange programme. She hopes prime minister Narendra Modi will allow her to proceed on the journey.

Namami Gange is a penance for all the pollution on the river, and the mission is to hand over a clean river to future generations.

She held a get together for the members of parliament at her residence where she updated them about the activities under the massive clean up programme and sought their help and co operation. Last month, around 250 programmes were launched across several states on the banks of the river. Bharti proudly declared that the World Bank had applauded the scheme by noting that it was the first time any river conservation plan had been chalked out so meticulously.

Several leaders gave suggestions for Namami Gange projects in their state. Many said that the MPs of each state should be kept in the loop over launching any initiative in their state and the minister agreed to the suggestion.

MP Manoj Tiwari suggested that folk singers and musicians should be encouraged to perform on the banks of the rivers, and this initiative too should be a part of the Namami Gange project.

Bharati has decided to hold similar meetings every six months to update about the progress of the mission as well as to get new ideas.
