The University Grants Commission has released a list of 22 institutions which are allegedly functioning against the contravention of the UGC Act.
In an official circular, UGC advised students to be aware of these "self-styled, unrecognised" institutions.
The Commission said that section 23 of the UGC Act prohibits use of the word ‘University’ by institutions established other than by norms.
“Students and public are hereby informed that, at present, the following 22 self-styled, unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the University Grants Commission Act in various parts of the country. These universities have been declared as fake and they are not entitled to confer any degree. It is cautioned not to take admission in fake universities,” it said.
