Telangana youth kills self owing to alleged police harassment

A youth from Manakonduru village on Karimnagar-Warangal highway in Telangana committed suicide owing to alleged police harassment.

On Tuesday, a few of the youths from the village were celebrating Dussehra. They got a bit too noisy and when the police intervened, the youths assaulted the cops.

The cops asked five youths to come to the police station. They were given a warning and was released after the intervention of the village Sarpanch.

One of the youths, 23-year old Shravan, went home and committed suicide on Tuesday night. The family members of the deceased alleged that Shravan was abused by the cops and was left traumatised, forcing him to resort to the extreme step.

Relatives and villagers took out a procession, carrying Shravan's body. They attacked the police station, ransacked the furniture and damaged the CCTV cameras and police vehicle. The protestors also staged a sit-in on the Karimnagar-Warangal highway, disrupting traffic for over two hours.

Taking note of the situation, Karimnagar Superintendent of Police V.B. Kamalasan Reddy suspended Sub-inspector Vamshikrishna. A case under relevant sections was registered based on the complaint by family members of Shravan. A case was also registered against the protestors for damaging police property.
