Erstwhile Andhra Pradesh is a land of icons, statues and more statues. Naming roads after leaders, scientists and others who made significant contributions to the society and erecting their statues is synonym to honourning them in the twin Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
In fact, after the death of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy in an accident, his son and YSR Congress Party president Jaganmohan Reddy installed his father's statues across the state. There are fewer statues of the late leader in Telangana as the move did not receive encouraging response from there.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's daughter and Nizamabad MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha is taking a different route. Soon, she will have a village named after her. The village of Khanapur in Nizamabad district will be called Kavithapur from December 4.
The people in the village are only too enthusiastic about the rechristening as the MP has promised the 274 families in this village that she would build all of them two-bedroom houses. The houses will be in a different location as the village is in a low lying area which has increased chances of flooding because of the Sriram Sagar project on the banks of river Godavari.
As the decision to change the name of the village was unanimous, the village panchayat passed a resolution to this effect and a huge sign board with the new name has been erected at the entrance of the village.
