Switzerland-based manufacturing company Stadler Rail AG has agreed to set up a locomotive and rail coach manufacturing unit in Visakhapatnam.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who is on a visit to Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum to be held in Davos, met Stadler executives in Zurich and invited them to set up the unit in the state. The company agreed to build coaches for Amaravati and Visakhapatnam metro rail projects and and promised that it would consider setting up the manufacturing unit in Visakhapatnam.

Stadler Rail AG has a range of products in the commuter rail and railway segments. The company, which is the world's leading manufacturer in rack and pinion rail vehicles, builds main-line dual-mode locomotives, shunting locomotives and passenger carriages, including the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive in Europe.

The company already has a unit at Kancharapara in West Bengal.

"We have plans to expand (our operations) in India and the USA. We plan to make India the southeast Asian hub for manufacturing rail coaches and locomotives," said the executive vice-president Peter Jenelten of Stadler.

Naidu said two metro rail lines were being developed and high-speed trains would ply on them. He noted that the state ranking no.1 in 'ease of doing business' helped in attracting such ventures and added that as many as 3,000 people would be employed when the unit is set up.
