Strike in West Bengal unsuccessful : CPM leader Biman Bose

India Currency Notes Protest Activists of left front take out a protest march against the government's decision to withdraw high denomination notes from circulation, in Kolkata on Monday | AP

Left front chairman and senior CPM leader Biman Bose admitted that the strike in West Bengal was unsuccessful and that it could have been a mistake on the part of left leaders to call a strike in this manner.

Speaking at Alimuddin Street, party’s state headquarters, Bose said, “I admit that the strike was not successful. Perhaps the strike was called without proper planning. We did not get enough response from the public.”

Bose, the senior Politburo member said that the issue of demonetisation was far too complex for people to understand.

“We failed to make people understand the rationale behind the strike. The public is not feeling the crunch yet. But we feel that when they understand the trouble they are in, it will be too late,” Bose said on Monday.

He said the left parties would imbibe an important lesson from this failure.

“We called the strike in a hurry and could not quickly communicate the reason behind it with the people. We will convene on November 30 to decide on future course of action,” said Bose.

Bose is the first CPM leader who admitted that the strike has been largely unsuccessful. It was announced nationwide by the let parties, but it was largely successful only in Kerala and Tripura.
