Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has voiced his support for decriminalisation of homosexuality in India. He has said that the “obsolete laws” like Section 377 shall hamper the progress of the country.

"It's an individual preference, if we hold on to obsolete laws, we will be back in the 15th century,” he told Network 18, while commenting on the ongoing movement to scrap the Section 377, a British-era law that criminalises same sex relationships.

He also added that while some politicians have enough courage to do the right thing, some are dependent on their vote banks and hold back. He also said educating people and making them aware of the social ills are also important.

“The ruler cannot impose, reformer & ruler have to work together. Sasak and Sudharak marriage has to happen otherwise progress will be hampered,” he said.

The gay rights movement got a shot in the arm last week, when the Supreme Court sent a bunch of curative petitions, challenging its 2013 order that upheld Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code to five-judge Constitution Bench, to take decide whether to retain the Colonial-era law.
