In a move to prevent incidents of female foeticide in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath government is working on a plan to open a separate police station to deal with such cases. This will work on the lines of the Special Task Force, a special wing of police which deals with specific cases.

The police station will receive complaints from all over the state, and, if required, will conduct raids in hospitals and other outfits which are found involved in the crime.

The government has entrusted the Women Welfare Department with the responsibility of this police station which will function under Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994. The department has obtained a No Objection Certificate from home, justice and health departments in this regard.

One Station House officer (SHO), one Sub Inspector (SI) and a few constables will be deployed in this station. The whole wing will be supervised by additional and deputy superintendent of police. The government will constitute a special wing at the state level.

The government feels that this move will keep tabs on nursing homes and hospitals and ultrasound centres involved in determination of sex of children and female foeticide.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed to bring a proposal in this connection at the cabinet meeting soon.

The state officials have studied the model of PCPNDT Bureau of Investigation in Rajasthan, which deals with cases of sex determination and illegal termination of pregnancy. The bureau works on the lines of a police station and has the power under IPC and CrPc to deal with such cases.

Last month, the state government had started a scheme under which informers would alert the state authorities about attempts and incidents of female foeticide. The chief minister had also launched 181 Women Helpline and flagged off 64 rescue vans.
