Sons of Congress and BJP leaders on Thursday won the bypolls held at Ater and  Bandhavgarh  Assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh.

Hemant Katare, son of deceased Congress leader and the leader of opposition Satyadev Katare, and BJP's Shivnarayan Singh retained their respective seats left vacant by their fathers.

Shivnarayan Singh defeated Congress' candidate Savitri Singh from Bandhavgarh seat in Umaria district by 25,476 votes. The seat had fallen vacant after his father, a minister in the state cabinet, was elected to Lok Sabha last November in Shahdol bypoll.

Katare defeated powerful BJP leader Arvind Bhadoria by a margin of 857 votes in a close fight at Ater.

Ater bypolls had become controversial after Congress complained of rigging and manipulation of the Electronic Voting Machines. The district collector, SP and more than two dozen senior officials, including police inspectors, were removed by poll authorities.

The high profile bypoll had become a prestige issue for Congress' Jyotiraditya Scindia who had campaigned in Ater for three days. Ater is 90 kms from Gwalior.
