Laying to rest the uncertainties surrounding the ascension of Rahul Gandhi as Congress president, Sonia Gandhi told a private news channel that Rahul will soon take over as the party chief.

Sonia Gandhi was speaking to NDTV after the launch of former president Pranab Mukherjee's autobiography.  "You have been asking this for so many years and it's now happening," she said, the news channel reported.

Earlier, rumour mills were abuzz with reports that Rahul Gandhi would be elevated as the Congress president come Diwali.

Rahul's elevation to the post of president informally began a few months ago, when organisational elections were announced. The schedule prescribed the election of presidents of both committees by August 20, and block level presidents, vice presidents, treasurers and Pradesh Congress committees by September 15. A month thereafter, the office bearers of the All India Congress Committee will be elected by the PCCs—implying that Rahul Gandhi will bag the top post and handpick his team before Diwali.
