In a crucial development in the sensational Sr Abhaya case, a former crime Branch SP, K.T. Michael, who was part of the investigation in the preliminary stage, has been named as an accused.

The move comes after a directive by a special CBI court. He has been accused of destroying evidence and conspiring to rescue the accused.

A social worker, Joemon Puthenpurikkal, had approached the court seeking to include even those who tried to destroy evidence as accused.

Sister Abhaya was found dead in the St Pius convent in Kottayam on March 27, 1992. Local police crime branch had stated that the nun had committed suicide, but a CBI probe later concluded that Abhaya was murdered.

Michael's name has been included along Fr Thomas M Kottur, 61, and Fr Dr Jose Puthrukkayil and Sr Stephy.
