Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan has been served an Income Tax notice in what appears to be an attempt by the Union government to make good on its promise to unearth the black money stashed in tax havens.
According to media reports, the actor has been asked to disclose details of his investments in Bermuda, British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Dubai. The notice has been served under Section 131 of the Income-Tax Act. A detailed questionnaire has been sent to the actor, seeking details of his undisclosed income.
According to a report in Economic Times, although the Income Tax department has information on the off-shore investments of many wealthy Indians, it is unclear if the authorities have any clear evidence against the actor's investments in tax havens.
It is not just Khan who has been served an IT notice. According sources, a few industrialists too have been given similar notices.
