Chit fund scam accused Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who is in judicial custody in Odisha, was one of the guests of honour for an Eastern Railways function in Kolkata on Frdiay.

The name of Bandyopadhyay, who was arrested a few months ago in connection with the Rose Valley chit fund scam, was on the invitation card for a function organised to mark the opening of a visa and customs checking unit inside the compartment of Indo-Bangla train—Maitree Express—instead of at the check post. The project was was inaugurated by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu from Delhi via video conference as the event was held in Kolkota.

Many have questioned the careless attitude of the railway officials while drawing up the list of invitees.

“How can they put an accused as a special invitee,” asked local Congress leader Sankar Paul.

Eastern Railway spokesperson Ravi Mahapatra said there was nothing wrong in inviting the scam accused MP.

“It’s customary on our part to invite the local MP. We did that in the case of Kunal Ghosh (another MP who was arrested in chit fund scam). So that custom was maintained,” said Mahapatra.

“What's wrong in it? He is still MP and he is innocent. He was booked because of political reasons,” said Trinamool MP Sultan Ahmad.
