RSS plans big push to expand its footprint

The Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh’s women wing—Rashtra Sevika Samiti—which is celebrating its 80th anniversary by holding a three day conference in Delhi, has been slowly expanding its reach.

In 2011, there were 2,130 shakhas across the nation, which have increased to 2,784 shakhas in 2016. These are spread over 2,380 towns and villages in India. The Samiti has presence in 22 countries across the world.

The three day conclave from November 11 would have a theme on the role of the family in nation building and cultural preservation through family. The event will be inaugurated by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Goa's Governor Mridula Sinha will also be attending it.

Deepa Malik, Paralympic silver medalist, will be felicitated at the valedictory function.

Reacting to the issue of Triple Talaq, the Rashtra Sevika Samiti said that the solution to the issue should come from within the Muslim community.

"All women should have uniform justice and there should be no discrimination in that," said Seetha Annadanam, all India general secretary of RSS's women wing.

"We have passed a proposal on the issue of triple talaq in the past. From the point of view of safety of women and what is currently going on in the community, this must happen. The problem has risen from the community, so the answer will also come from within," Annadanam said.

Interestingly, a host of key events are being organised by the RSS-related bodies during this month. In one of the major push at promoting right wing intellectuals and thought process, a three-day conclave is organised in Bhopal from November 12.

It is being promoted as a counter to the Jaipur Literary Festival which has been able to create a niche for itself in the literary world. Titled Lok Manthan, the festival in Bhopal would witness participation of authors, academics and artists who would promote Indian thought in culture and arts. The theme of this conclave revolves around decolonising of the Indian mind, art forms and social sciences.
