Even as stage is set for the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as president of the Congress, the BJP claimed that the Congress vice president's extensive election campaign in poll-bound Gujarat will benefit the saffron party. Assembly elections in Gujarat as scheduled to be held on December 9 and 14.

Union Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said Rahul Gandhi's campaign for Gujarat assembly polls has come as a "blessing in disguise" as it offers an opportunity to people to judge "where each one of us stand", reports PTI.

Rahul Gandhi has been campaigning extensively in the state and had visited several temples in the state over the course of his campaign. He was even accused of "soft-Hindutva" card ahead of the polls.

The minister said Rahul Gandhi's campaign in the state has given the voters an "opportunity to judge where each one of us stands." "I think on a serious note, in a way, it was a blessing in disguise for all of us, for the entire nation... The nation will be able to decide how long can they actually do business with Rahul Gandhi and the likes,” he added.

Commenting on the imminent elevation of the Congress scion as party president, the minister said

he found it strange that "each electoral defeat (for Congress) is directly proportional to the elevation of Gandhi,” reports PTI.

Noting that Gandhi was made the party vice president after the Congress lost 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the minister said the grand old party is waiting for Gandhi to lose Gujarat elections to make him party president.
