Rahul Gandhi calls PM Modi a 'selfie machine'

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday once again targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he was not bothered about anyone but himself and termed him a "selfie machine".

Addressing a rally in this Uttar Pradesh district adjoining Lucknow, he said though the people of India had elected a prime minister, they got a "selfie machine" in return.

Repeating his charge that the prime minister was busy waiving off loans of his industrialist friends, Gandhi said the Congress was proud of waiving off the loans of farmers and promised that if his party was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh in the assembly elections slated next year, it would write off loans of all farmers.

He also questioned Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati's silence on major issues, and said both were scared of Modi.

"Whenever these two leaders get up to speak in the Parliament, Modi stares at them and they sit down sheepishly," he said, adding that the SP and BSP chiefs were scared of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) being let loose on them.

A Congress leader, noting that both Mulayam Singh and Mayawati face cases of owning disproportionate assets, said it is rumoured that the fear of the CBI actively pursuing the probe makes both the BSP and the SP leaders muted in their attack on Modi.

Gandhi is on a 2,500km Kisan Yatra across UP, covering 223 of the 403 assembly constituencies. He has already covered eastern UP and after a two-day break, started the second leg of his Yatra on Monday.
