Who will succeed Pranab Mukherjee as President of India?

Voting to elect India's next President will take place July 17 as the term of President Pranab Mukherjee ends on July 24.

Announcing the election schedule for presidential polls, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said notification will be issued on June 14 and the last date for making nominations will be June 28.

Scrutiny will be on 29 June and the last date for withdrawal will be July 1.

The counting of votes will be held on July 20.

The electoral college comprises elected MPs from both houses of parliament and elected MLAs from all states as well as Delhi and Puducherry.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi attempting to unify the non-BJP parties to jointly field a candidate against the BJP's nominee. While BJP president Amit Shah has not ruled out the possibility of a consensus candidate who could be elected unanimously, he wanted the Opposition to first name their nominee or show them a panel of names. Between these two positions, the chance of voting for the next President of India appears to be a distinct possibility.
