Popular writer, columnist Tarak Mehta dead

Tarak Mehta, noted humorist, columnist, playwright and writer, passed away in Ahmedabad on Wednesday after prolonged illness. He was 88.

The Padma Shri awardee, who was born on December 26, 1929 in Ahmedabad has penned 80 books besides several one act and three act plays. Mehta had briefly served as deputy editor of Prajatantra daily. He had also written a column for a popular Gujarati weekly.

Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma, a popular Hindi serial on SAB TV, is based on his column Duniya Ne Undha Chashma.

Noted TV and stage personalities of Gujarat thronged his residence on hearing the news.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani condoled Mehta's death and tweeted saying he was saddened by the demise of Tarak Mehta.

Mehta's family has decided to donate his body to science.
