A 21-year-old girl was shot dead at a town near Kolkata on Thursday. The girl -- Moumita Biswas, 21, a law student -- is the daughter of a serving West Bengal police officer.

Police said the girl was shot at the campus of Kalyani Law college. The security guards at the institute had found the girl lying in a pool of blood.

“She was shot at her head and chest,” said a police officer of the Kalyani police station.

Moumita’s father, Biman, works as an assistant sub-inspector in Khardah police station of North 24 Parganas, adjoining Kolkata.

Biman said that his daughter had left him in 2015 and fled from home to marry her lover, Nikhil Majumdar, from Barrackpore. But the girl returned home and has since been separated from her husband.

“She again came back to me three months before,” said Biman. He had talked to her daughter just before the murder. But from 6.30 in the evening, Biman found her daughter’s mobile phones switched off. Moumita had two cell phones, which are missing now. Her money bag is still intact and no money was stolen.

According to police, the murder was definitely an act of revenge.

“The culprits ensured that she could not regain her life even if she was rushed to hospital. So they targeted her chest and head. The bullet on the back of head suggests possibilities of being killed by two persons at a time,” said a senior police officer.

Acting on the complaint from Biman, police have arrested Nikhil, estranged husband of Moumita.

The murder created furore inside the law college. The institute has been closed for indefinite period.
