Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at a BJP function in New Delhi has sparked an online outrage.
Modi said on Thursday that no other political parties have faced more adversaries than the BJP since independence. The comments were directed at the Opposition which had claimed that the saffron party had no role in the freedom movement.
He also said the BJP has faced more adversaries than the Congress under the British rule.
“The BJP will be the only party which has faced adversities since its birth. It faced difficulties at every turn and its every effort was seen in bad light.
“Even during the British times, the Congress party would not have faced so much adversity that we, our dedicated workers have gone through in 50-60 years,” he said at a foundation stone laying function for the party's headquarters in Delhi.
Modi's these remarks were widely perceived as undermining the struggles endured by the freedom fighters. Soon, #ModiInsultsFreedomFighters hashtag surfaced on Twitter, with critics lashing out at the prime minister for his comments.
“Modi Ji has a visceral hatred for @INCIndia . He can live with it. But to denigrate Mahatma Gandhi and others ? #ModiInsultsFreedomFighters,” tweeted Congress, party spokesperson Sanjay Jha.
“Modi cries foul to hide RSS' negative role in freedom movement & displays BJP's patriotism by beating the chest! #ModiInsultsFreedomFighters,” said a Twitter user.
“It's not acceptable that PM insults national heroes by putting BJP above nation #ModiInsultsFreedomFighters,” read another tweet.
“#ModiInsultsFreedomFighters No wonder..When RSS & Freedom are Miles Apart..expecting Mr.Modi 2 give respect 2 Freedom-Fighters!Unthinkable,” said another Twitter user.
Many even demanded an apology from Modi for his remarks.
