One year jail for Gujarat Protem Speaker Nima Acharya

Nima Acharya, BJP MLA and newly appointed Protem Speaker of 14th Gujarat State Assembly, was on Monday sentenced to one year jail in connection with a complaint of 2009 with regards to violation of electoral code of conduct. Two other persons have also been sentenced one year jail along with her.

The sentence was pronounced by Morbi town magistrate. The guilty have been given time of 30 days to challenge the conviction.

Two others who have been sentenced along with Acharya are former BJP MLA Kantibhai Amrutiya and Manoj Panara, convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti. 

Acharya told media that evidence of their involvement has not been put in the court and that is why “we have obtained a stay order”. She also said that they would challenge the order in the higher court.
