A professor of a government-run medical college in Odisha was arrested on charges of sexually harassing and intimidating a post-graduate dalit student on Saturday, reports said.

Laxmidhar Das, head of the anaesthesia department of the S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, was arrested after police found merit in the allegations of the student.

"Dr Das has been booked under sections 354, 354A and 354B of Indian Penal Code (all related to outraging modesty of women, demanding sexual favour) and section three of ST and SC (Prevention of Atrocities) Act," Arun Swain, Mangalabag police station in-charge, was quoted as saying.

According to the complaint filed by the victim, a first-year post graduate student, Das had been sexually harassing her for the last six months. She said at least twice when they were out of the state attending conferences, Das had asked her to accompany him to his room, and tried to force himself on her.

The professor, meanwhile, dismissed all charges and reportedly said they were framed by people with vested interests.

Several students of the medical college has carried out a rally on the campus, demanding the accused professor's ouster and strict action against him.
