A gastric bypass surgery enables an obese patient to lose weight as it completely changes how the patient’s stomach and small intestine absorb food

Daulatram Jogawat, the policeman who weighs 180 kgs and was subjected to fat shaming on Twitter by author Shobhaa De, underwent a gastric bypass surgery at Mumbai’s Saifee hospital on Thursday.

He was operated on by Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, chairman of institute of minimal access surgical sciences at Saifee, after undergoing a battery of tests so doctors could determine which other diseases he suffers from due to his obesity. Following the surgery, doctors say Jogawat should be able to lose 80 kgs over the next one year. He underwent a laparoscopic banded gastric bypass surgery and was shifted to the general ward after the procedure was successfully completed in one and a half hours.

"Jogawat also suffers from uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and water retention or lymphedema. However, these problems might disappear in the next few months and we will discharge him in the next few days," says Dr Lakdawala.

He further adds that they decided to go ahead with the surgery after the initial investigation found that Jogawat had no hormonal or genetic link for his obesity. A gastric bypass surgery enables an obese patient to lose weight as it completely changes how the patient’s stomach and small intestine absorb food. In fact, the surgery is performed to make the stomach smaller so that the obese patient feels full after consuming lesser food.

In a gastric bypass surgery, bariatric surgeons use staples to divide the stomach into two sections—a smaller upper section, which is also known as a pouch, and bigger lower section. Following that, the second stage of the surgery involves the surgeon connecting the small intestine to a hole in the pouch. Due to this procedure, the patient absorbs far lesser calories and is able to lose weight post surgery.
