The brother of 'Nirbhaya', the 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who died after she was brutally gang-raped in 2012 in Delhi, is all set to become a pilot. Their mother, Asha Devi, has thanked Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for her son's success.

Nirbhaya's brother, who was 19 years old when his sister's tragic death shook the nation, was badly affected by the incident. Asha Devi recently told the media that Gandhi regularly called her son, counselled him, and encouraged him to follow his dreams. The Congress vice president also got him enrolled into the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi in Rae Bareli, she said. He is now undergoing final training with a commercial airline in Gurugram. Asha Devi also thanked Priyanka Gandhi who would regularly call the family.

The Nirbhaya incident had sparked widespread outrage across the country, with women taking to the streets to demand safety, and the highest form of punishment for the accused. Asha Devi had put up a strong fight to get justice for her daughter. Of the six accused, one was a juvenile and was convicted and sent to a reform home for three years. He was released in 2015. The involvement of a juvenile in such a gruesome crime and protests against loopholes in the laws that lead to milder quantum of sentence for such convicts, had become a subject of nationwide debate. This paved way for the Juvenile Justice Bill, 2015.

Of the five other accused, one allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar jail, and others were sentenced to death. In May this year, the Supreme Court rejected the plea by the four convicts and upheld the death sentence. However, five months into the decision, the death sentence has still not been carried out. According to media reports, the Delhi Commission for Women questioned the delay and sent a notice to Tihar Jail administration and Deputy Commissioner of Police, (South District) on Wednesday.
