NIA frames charges against IS terror accused Mohamed Naser

The NIA special court in Delhi, on Thursday, framed charges under various sections of the anti-terror law against a 24-year-old computer engineer turned IS sympathiser Mohamed Naser. He had travelled to Sudan to join the Islamic State (IS) in 2015. Naser hails from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and was deported from Dubai in December 2015.

The case is fixed for prosecution evidence on March 21.

The NIA had filed a chargesheet against Naser on June 3, 2016. In its chargesheet, the NIA had said that it had enough evidence to establish that he was acting as an active member of ISIS who conspired, advocated, abetted, supported and recruited others to further the activities of the banned organisation.

According to the NIA, Mohamed Naser, along with his associates in India and abroad, was very active in promoting the ideology of IS. The NIA has a trail of digital evidence to establish his links with the outfit, including messages to his family that he was going to travel to Libya and Syria to join them.

"He was radicalised, under the influence provocative contents on ISIS online. His actions were motivated by associates in India and abroad," says the NIA.

According to NIA officials, the agency recieved help from his parents who had informed the intelligence agencies about his suspicious activities and intentions .

Naser was working in Dubai since October 2014. He had travelled to Sudan to join ISIS and remained there along with several operatives of different nationalities. He was arrested on December 11, 2015 in Delhi upon his return from Sudan.

According to NIA:

  • So far 52 persons arrested across the country for ISIS links
  • 80 percent of arrested IS accused have undergone formal schooling
  • Among the accused, 20 youth were graduates or engineers. There were 12 diploma holders
  • 28 arrested accused are in age group 18-25; 20 others are in age group 25-40 and only four are above forty years of age.
