A convict, out on parole, in the Naroda Patiya riots case was arrested by Ahmedabad Police on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a journalist-turned-activist.

Revati Laul, who is writing a book on the riots convicts, had filed a complaint alleging that she was slapped by Suresh Chhara on January 20 when she visited the latter’s house in Naroda area.

Suresh was sentenced to 31 years of imprisonment in the riots case. More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, had lost their lives in the wide-spread violence in 2002.

According to sources, Revati had asked Suresh if he wished to share information about himself, his family and his past. After a few minutes, he reportedly got up and slapped Revati. She was also reportedly hit on the nose. She could get out of the house only after the intervention of Suresh’s son and neighbours.

Revati could not be reached for comments.
