Mumbai traffic police plans to go cashless and would henceforth issue only electronic tickets or challans

In keeping with its 'Safe Streets, Safe Citizens' motto, Mumbai has launched two mobile-based apps aimed at reining in errant drivers.

Simultaneously, Mumbai traffic police plans to go cashless and would henceforth issue only electronic tickets or challans booking errant drivers. The ubiquitous policeman accepting fines in cash at road corners and issuing paper challans is now taboo.

The recent spate of efforts is part of a larger drive on the part of the Mumbai traffic police to curb reckless and rash driving on the city's streets. Also, ensuring an overall heightened awareness of road safety has been a major concern for the Mumbai police of late. In a parallel fashion, the traffic police department is also working on a few modalities to ease heavy traffic congestion in the city's main arterial roads.

The police have recently launched apps, available on iOS and Android platforms, providing ordinary citizens an opportunity to upload pictures of any traffic violation or infringement occurring around them.

According to joint commissioner of police (traffic) Milind Bharambe, the police would initiate action immediately after vetting and authenticating the veracity of the pictures. Bharambe said the MTP app was a shot in the arm for the traffic police force to clamp down on rash and reckless drivers.

Supplementing this step, the Mumbai traffic police has also initiated electronic challans (tickets) — issued against anyone caught violating traffic rules and regulations. On Sunday, a Maruti car rammed into Yuva Sena boss Aditya Thackeray's BMW at the Kalanagar junction. The driver of the Maruti later admitted that he was rash and tore through the signals.
