Trouble in SP

Mulayam works out a compromise formula to bring truce in SP

After the five-day bitter power struggle in the Samajwadi Party, there seems to be a truce between the warring fractions, thanks to the timely intervention of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

A four-point truce formula—worked out under the leadership of Mulayam—include giving back the portfolios taken away from Shivpal Yadav, reinstating sacked minister Gyatri Prajapati, re-appointing Shivpal as the state president of the party and the SP chief discussing with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav the removal of chief secretary Deepak Singhal.

Besides these four points, the chief minister insisted on a fifth one—that no 'outsider' will be allowed to interfere with the party affairs. Akhilesh made it clear that he would not tolerate any outside interference both in the functioning of the government and the party to which Mulayam agreed. The chief minister said he is ready to do anything to make his father happy.

Mulayam had separately met Akhilesh and Shivpal to work out the truce formula and later sat with the two to discuss the matters.

Earlier, in order to downplay the rift in the party, Mulayam categorically said that there are no differences of opinion between Shivpal, Ram Gopal and Akhilesh. He claimed that there are some people who do not want the party to come back to power and urged the workers to strive to ensure that the party comes back to power in the state in the upcoming assembly polls.

SP's family tree

Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is the national president of SP, married twice. After the death of his first wife Malti Devi, he married to Suman Gupta. Akhilesh, his elder son is born to Malti Devi and he had his second son Prateek from Suman.

Akhilesh became the CM of UP in 2012. He entered politics after completing a master’s degree from Australia. He married Dimple Yadav, who is now an MP from Kannuj, in 1999.

Shivpal is the youngest brother of Mulayam and had played a crucial role in building the SP. Shivpal’s wife Sarla Yadav and son Aditya Yadav too are into politics. The party is likely to field Aditya in the upcoming assembly elections.

His younger brother Ram Gopal Yadav is a Rajya Sabha MP. Ram Gopal, a teacher by profession, is also the party's general secretary. His son Akshay Yadav is an MP from Firozabad.

Mulayam’s elder brother Abhay Ram’s son Dhermendra Yadav, who studied in Allahabad and was actively involved in politics during his college days, is an MP from Badaun.

Mulayam’s another nephew Tej Pratap Yadav too is an MP from Mainpuri. He is also the son-in-law of Lalu Yadav.

Aparna Yadav, wife of Prateek, is yet to step into politics. She is likely to contest the upcoming assembly elections.
