Madhya Pradesh has created a special Rs 1,000 crore fund to support farmers in distress. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that this fund will be disbursed among farmers when they are hit by a natural calamity or loss of crop due to external factors.

In a public function held at Guna to distribute Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme certificate, the chief minister said that that state government has made a special provision of this fund of Rs 1,000 crore in its budget to compensate for the loss of farmers’ produce. Crop insurance fund certificates worth Rs 212 crores were distributed to 65,000 farmers.

Quoting Shivraj Singh, a government release said that the Madhya Pradesh government is committed to double the income of farmers for which resources are being made available at every step of cultivation. He said that Madhya Pradesh is the only state in the country where farmers are given loans for farming without interest.

“The government is now making arrangement that if there is a fall in the market price of any produce of the farmers, then the produce will be purchased on support price. The amount of support price will be directly deposited in the accounts of farmers,” the release said.

He said that pattas (land rights title) will be given to the people without houses to construct houses. Apart from pattas to the homeless, the state government will grant funds for construction of toilets.

Reeling under the farmers unrest after long months of protests and subsequent firing that killed six farmers, the measure is seen as a step toward reclaiming the lost ground among the farmers community.

The ceremony to distribute Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme certificate was held in Guna, the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia. BJP national president Amit Shah, in his visit to Madhya Pradesh recently, has asked party unit to defeat Scindia who has never lost an election.
