Momos are killers, ban it, demands BJP MLA

Ramesh Arora, a BJP MLA in Jammu and Kashmir, has demanded a ban on momos. He alleged that momos were more dangerous than narcotic drugs and can even cause cancer. Said Arora to THE WEEK, “Momos are filled with ajinomoto, which is banned in more than 8 to 9 countries. We should educate the masses on the damage that momos can cause to the human body. Several life-threatening diseases are caused by frequent in-take of momos. I am getting good response from people in Jammu and Kashmir. Even doctors have supported me on this matter.”

Arora said that he is hopeful that the Union government would look into his allegations and that there would be a pan-India ban on momos. “Junk food has already taken a toll on our children. We need to educate them and tell them not to have food like momos. Ajinomoto causes imbalance in the body and triggers hunger. Without ajinomoto, momos won’t taste good.  Momos are killers. We cannot let it grow in a civilised society,” said Arora.

Ajinomoto or monosodium glutamate was declared unsafe by the World Health Organisation in 2004. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Research Institute, Kolkata, in 2007, said that ajinomoto can cause stomach cancer.

A kind of steamed dumpling filled with meat and vegetables, momos originated in Nepal. Today, it is one of the most popular fast foods in India, Nepal, the UK and the US. There are different kinds of momos available in the market.

Arora, recently, had organised a conference in Jammu on health issues caused by momos. It was attended by doctors, teachers and officials of the drug and food control departments in the state.
