Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three-nation trip on Saturday. He will begin with Portugal and reach the US on June 24. Apart from the much-anticipated meeting with US President Donald Trump, Modi will also address a CEOs' meet and interact with members of the Indian diaspora. The engagements will be on a much lower scale than his previous trips, where he addressed a massive audience.

Both countries are keen to take forward the last three years' progress. The Indo-US ties have been called the defining partnership of the 21st century. Although bilateral ties progress irrespective of the government in power, the personal initiative of the leaders provide direction, thrust as well as that much-vaunted intimate touch. Modi had developed a surprisingly warm relationship with Barack Obama.

Foreign secretary S. Jaishankar was recently in Washington DC to prepare for this important visit.

Modi will return to India via the Netherlands, where he will stop for a day-long visit.
