Finally, Mission Bhagiratha might become a reality if Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is to be believed. At a recent meeting, he said the government's flagship programme, Mission Bhagiratha, will start supply of drinking water to all villages in the state as a new year gift to people this December. He claimed that this would be for the first time in the country that a scheme of such mammoth proportions was being implemented at a cost of Rs 43,000 crore. “This is the biggest challenge before the state government, but we will overcome all hurdles to achieve it,” the CM sounded positive.

In fact, this project will be completed one year ahead of the scheduled completion in 2018. The TRS government made this their dream project and had received accolades from Prime Minister Narendra Modi even as delegations from other states visited to study this scheme. The government is hoping to invite President Ram Nath Kovind to inaugurate the project later this year.

In fact, when he became the first chief minister of the state, Rao had vowed that he will not contest the next assembly elections if everyone in the state do not get pure drinking water by then. To achieve the December target, the CM is now pushing departments concerned and implementation agencies to ensure that all intake wells and water treatment plants are completed to ensure water supply to the people. He said works on pumps should begin by September and by December all the works should be completed.

“Since Mission Bhagiratha is a life and death question for the state government, officials, public representatives and implementation agencies should work day and night to accomplish the task,” the CM said. “We have prepared Mission Bhagiratha programme keeping in mind the needs for the next 30 years. Water should be supplied to people in villages. If need be, increase the number of tanks and capacity of pipelines. For this, ministers and MLAs should work day and night,” he added.

The CM also said though sitting legislators will be fielded again in the next assembly polls, they will be made more accountable, sending a message to the MLAs that they cannot take victory for granted. He also wants all the elected representatives in his party to popularise the welfare measures taken up by his government.
