Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Saturday charged the BJP with politicising national symbols like the flag and memories of martyrs in the course of their “Tiranga yatras” and “Yaad karo kurbani” kind of programmes.
In a press release issued in Delhi, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of organising such programmes at the instance of the RSS, “which feels an inner sense of guilt for not participating in the national freedom struggle”.
The central government, she maintains, is using the opportunity to distract the nation from its failures. “In the last two years, the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been doing less and talking more with regard to people's welfare. This has disappointed people who are now losing hope in this government. They (the government) are merely trying to distract the public from this,” she elaborated.
Mayawati attacked the BJP saying that despite prime minister's repeated asking, the central ministers and the BJP MPs and leaders were not able to muster the courage to face people. That was why they were travelling to different places at government expense and holding events and press conferences there, she said.
