Mamata orders judicial probe into Basirhat communal riots

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday constituted a judicial commission to probe communal riots at Baduria and Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district.

Justice (retired) Soumitra Pal will carry out the investigation and submit his report to the government.

Mamata constituted the commission after intense criticism from the opposition parties.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Minakshi Lekhi and two other party MPs were arrested on their way to Basirhat. They were picked up from Birati, some 5 km from the airport.

"If the place is calm, what's wrong in MPs like us visiting the place?" asked Lekhi. Police told her that there had been restriction to visit the place. 

Bashirhat and Baduria have been reeling under violence after a controversial Facebook post by a school student.

West Bengal police on Saturday acted tough against the people who were fuelling speculation.

Bhabotosh Chatterjee, a resident of Sonarpur was arrested for allegedly posting a picture from a Bhojpuri film claiming it to be a riot-hit area. Hundreds of people shared his post where a woman was shown being publicly molested by a group of people.

A BJP delegation met Governor K.N. Tripathy and apprised him of the situation.
