A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was left red-faced on Sunday after he was greeted with a garland of shoes when he visited a village in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh.

According to media reports, Dinesh Sharma, the saffron party's candidate for Dhamnod civic polls, reached the village to seek votes. He was doing door-to-door campaign when he was made to wear the garland made with shoes as the villagers were angry about the acute water crisis in the region.

The person, who humiliated the BJP leader with the garland, claimed that the villagers had repeatedly taken up the issue of water crisis with the authorities concerned. "There's acute water problem. Had complained about it. Our women went to the then chairperson to complain, but a complaint was registered against them. They were called multiple times to police station even at night. So I did this, the man said, reports ANI.

Reacting to the incident, the BJP leader said, “They are one of my own. There must have been something which upset him and he acted like that. We will sit together and talk. I am like their child,” according to ANI.
