Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has appointed four lawyers to represent Delhi Police in JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar case, removing Delhi government's standing counsel Rahul Mehra from the case, a move that may spark another tussle between the LG and AAP dispensation.

In a letter to Joint Commissioner (South-East), the LG office said that the Lt Governor has accorded approval for appointment of Anil Soni as Government counsel under Section 24(8) of CrPC for representing Delhi Police in the JNU case.

Apart from Soni, Tushar Mehta, Sanjay Jain and Shailendra Babbar have been appointed as new counsel for Delhi Police in the JNU case that sparked a row following arrest of JNUSU chief Kumar on sedition charge.

Delhi Government' standing counsel Rahul Mehra was representing the city police in the case so far.

Slamming the LG's move, a senior Delhi government official said that it is highly improper and interference in the functioning of the government. He alleged that it looks like that the Delhi Police and LG have something to hide.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court directed the city police to file by tomorrow a status report on its investigation in the sedition case in which JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar has been arrested.

The court's direction came while hearing Kanhaiya's bail plea which was opposed by Delhi Police.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the police, told the bench that they were opposing the bail plea of Kanhaiya.

Delhi Police had faced criticism for the handling of the situation after Kumar was allegedly beaten up by lawyers inside Patiala House Court when he was being produced for hearing.
