With the unprecedented press conference by Supreme Court judges throwing up serious issues of concern with regard to independence of judiciary, a premier body of lawyers has taken it upon itself to discuss the situation and make recommendations to the apex court.

The executive committee of the Bar Association of India at its meeting on Friday took note of the issues raised, recognising that these were relates to the functioning of the Supreme Court, and had to be addressed.

While it agreed that a resolution of the issues raised had to be left to the collective wisdom of the Supreme Court, and the norms with regard to allocation of cases had to be left to the Chief Justice of India, the association felt it should deliberate on the situation.

In pursuance of the resolution, the association on Friday embarked on a three-day convention on the topic 'Restoring Country's Confidence in Rule of Law - The Way Forward'.

"One may not agree on holding of press conference by the honourable judges of the Supreme Court, but we cannot brush aside the issues raised by them," said senior advocate and president of the BAI, Lalit Bhasin at the inauguration of the convention.

"As members of the legal profession, it is our duty to look into the issues raised by the judges," he said.

The bar association will firm up recommendations at the convention, and these will be submitted to the Supreme Court.

President-elect of the BAI, Prashant Kumar said this is a time when the bar has to to play the most critical mediatory role. "We are the best vehicle to initiate the process of resolution and carry out reforms," he said.
